Thiruvathirakali commonly known as kaikottikkali is a traditional ritual art form of Kerala. This comes under folk dance forms of Kerala and is performed only by women. The typical characteristic of this form of folk dance is the accompaniment of folk music and the text is often a reference to puranic charactors like Lord Siva, Lord, Rama, Lord Krishna, Devi Parvathy, Devi Saraswathy et. al. This art form is usually performed on the Thiruvathira day of the month of Dhanu (November - December) by women performers of elite families. The performance starts at dusk and usually lasts till next dawn. There are also various rituals associated with this art form.
