
Smt. Vaikom B. Rajammal , the renowned Carnatic Music vocalist was born on 31 st August 1940 in Vaikom, Kerala. She began to study Music at the age of five. Her first music performance was at the age of nine in Vaikom Mahadeva Temple . Vaikom Vasudevan Nair, her first Guru brought her to the enchanting world of Carnatic Music. Like many of our famous musicians, Smt. Rajmmal has got a strong musical background. Her brother, late Gayaka Ratnam Vechoor Harhara Subrahmaniam was famous vocalist in Kerala.
After her schooling, she joined RLV Music Academy for her higher studies in Carnatic Music. Acknowledging her excellence in the field of Carnatic music she was directly admitted to the second year class for the course having four years duration. From there, she secured 1 st rank with first class in the year 1960. In1959, she got the first position in All India Radio Competition. She is a 'B' High Artist in TVM for the last fourty years.
Smt. Rajammal, enriched her knowledge under the guidance of many famous musicians like late Sri. Semmangudi Sreenivasa Iyer, Gayakaratnam Late Prof. Vechoor N. Harihara Subrahmaniam Iyer, late Sree Kalyanasundram, late Sri. Nellayi Krishnamurthy, Prof. Mavelikara R. Prabhakara Varma(Retired Principal, SST College of Music Thiruvananthapuram) and so on.
She rendered many musical concerts in various Sangeetha Sabhas, inside and outside kerala. From her 21 st year onwards, she has been rendering carnatic music recitals at the Dakshina Mookambi National Festival for Dance & Music, Panachikkadu. She has also bagged many awards as an honour of her excellence. Sangeetha Vaidushi & Gurupooja Puraskaram are some among them.
Smt. Rajammal began her professional career as a music teacher at Government UP School, Thiruvarpu, Kottayam, Kerala. After her long 32 years f service, she retired from Govt. Higher Secondary School , Kottayam. Nearly 300 - 400 students have undergone training in carnatic music under her expert guidance. Many of them scored first places in various school & college youth festivals and completions organized by the All India Radio. For the last thirty five years, she is a judge for the District, State youth festivals and Kerala Kalolsavam.
