Music - reality shows - is there a logic?
This is an era of reality shows. A term that is familiar with the television viewers of modern times. Reality shows based on music is on its rise in India. Many shows are based on pop – film music and some others based on classical music. The outcome of these shows is that the television channels get a new target audience to tap. Earlier the majority of the TV viewership was to soap operas commonly termed serials. Now the trend is slowly changing to reality shows. The pathetic situation is that, though many young artists get a chance to perform through these shows, often the judgment is funny and in some cases absurd. The reason for this is that, the TV channels have there own priority to push certain candidates to the next levels. Also it is ridiculous to see marks specially allotted to costume and ambiance for a music performance. In extreme cases, judges even make clumsy commends which the candidates and their parents gulp with out the least resistance. All these are in effect deteriorating the capabilities of the participants
The SMS vote system is also yet another matter of concern. Viewers vote for their proffered candidates to save them at the elimination round, whereas in reality, the candidate was eliminated 1 week back in most cases (the programme was most probably taped a week earlier!). The revenue through SMS is the main source of income to the channels and the sponsors. Mostly the main sponsor of the event is a mobile phone company. The channel and the sponsors get cash, the participants get fame..poor viewers…their cellphone bills gets transformed in to true testimonials for their love towards reality show “stars”
Music is divine, but when you start trading with it, it is just noise.
